Puppet Studio Bios
Puppet Studio designs, creates, builds and performs custom puppets for film, TV, commercials, YouTube and broadband applications as well as live performance.
The Puppet Studio was founded in the 1980’s by Greg Williams and Steve Sherman.
They have worked as lead puppeteers with Jim Henson’s Muppets and Rick Baker, the Oscar-winning special effects and makeup artist.
The duo met while working for Sid and Marty Krofft on the Barbara Mandrell Show. Steve later was nominated for an Emmy for another Kroff show, DC Follies. Steve and Greg are still among the Kroffts’ go-to puppet designers, builders and consultants.
From Krofft, Greg and Steve moved to Hanna-Barbera and later to Mattel toys where they designed toys and characters for Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake, among others. Their 3 year contract with Mattel included writing stores and creating characters for Wheeled Warriors, Hot Wheels and Barbie as well as toys for infants. This led to a puppet-based special for the Popples toy line and series, which Steve and Greg built the Popples puppets for as well as performed the puppets.
They’ve been a Saturday Morning staple over the years, with a 5 year run on Beakman’s World for CBS Saturday morning and then a 6 year weekly series for ABC Weekend Specials as Captain O.G. Readmore, who was the host. Other Saturday morning series include performing and building puppets for Pee-wee’s Playhouse and the Riders in the Sky series for CBS Saturday Morning.
In addition to an Emmy nomination, Williams & Sherman received a Citation for Excellence from the International Society of Puppeteers (UNIMA) for their work on Beakman’s World.
Combining traditional puppetry with the latest developments in animatronics, materials and filming techniques, they continue to refine their technique.
